The 5th edition
Headway was first published in 1986 and was the first English Language Teaching course to combine educational material with real world content. Headway broke the mould and revolutionised ELT materials giving teachers and students a much more enriched, accessible learning experience.
For the 5th Edition, OUP wanted to continue to represent Headway’s core values and to affect a moderate to high-level of design change.
In reference to the 1986 edition we dropped the triangles and revisited the original chevrons. This time though they were formed around true 90° angles and repeated in the title to create a masthead. To help humanise the cover we introduced a lead character with a definite, directional quality. White was used liberally to let the covers breathe.
On completion we provided a simple, step-by-step user-guide so that subsequent levels and other components could be created in-house.
